This fully restored car is powered by THE LAST LANDY HEMI, and a beefed 727 push-button Torqueflite by Art Carr and 3000 RPM stall converter.
The 426 HEMI motor was purchased new from Chrysler in 2006 and taken DIRECTLY to Landy for complete disassembly and blueprinting without ever being started. The block was lined bored, decked, honed and squared, and some inherent oiling limitations corrected. The compression was bumped up a tenth of a point. The cam was upsized. Dick Landy and I met on several occasions, discussed the motor design and its progress, and had some priceless long talks about drag history.
The engine was dynoed at 5 PM on December 28th, 2006 at Landy’s shop. The motor makes just about 500/500 on 91-octane pump gas, and with only 8.6:1 compression! It has ENORMOUS tickle factor.
Dick Landy entered the hospital the next day and died 13 days later.
Dick Landy Industries (DLI) was closed shortly thereafter by his wife and sold.
Notwithstanding the gnarly idle and the block-long tire-smoking capability, the car drives like a sewing machine, no interior exhaust drone, no rattling, no overheating, etc .
This is about a 95-point car.
